The Balance of Light and the Turning of the Wheel
Hello. Welcome to our 14th episode of the Kairos Wisdom Keepers, The Fall Equinox and Mabon Rituals. I’m Janet Raftis and I’m Ina Lukas, and today we’re going to talk about the significance of the Fall Equinox and Mabon cycle, along with rituals and ways to celebrate it. This is such an amazing time of year. The Fall Equinox, like the Spring Equinox, is a day in which the light is exactly balanced, marking our slow descent into winter. The word equinox means “equal night,” and this moment of harmony invites us to tune into the equal hours of sun and moon. From here, we enter the heavy moon time of the Wheel of the Year. This year, the equinox also ushers us into eclipse season, making balance and harmony especially important. Cultures across the world have honored this moment for thousands of years, building monuments such as Chichen Itza, Angkor Wat, Chaco Canyon, the Sphinx, and Palenque to capture the exact balance of day and night.
The Second Harvest and the Shifting of Light
This is the time of the Second Harvest—after Lammas and before Samhain—when the bulk of the harvest has come in and the days begin to shorten more rapidly. Historically, this has been a bountiful celebration, a time to honor everything planted in spring that has now come to fruition. As the light shifts dramatically after the equinox, our bodies respond on a hormonal level. Light affects the endocrine system and our internal rhythms, and as we move into more darkness, our biology begins preparing for the quieter months. We leave the extroverted part of the year and enter the introverted one—more receptive, reflective, and inward. This shift can trigger grief, sadness, or seasonal depression, but attuning consciously to the cycles can help us receive the gifts of this season of deepening.
Senescence, Autumnal Light, and the Beauty of Slowing Down
The spiritual significance of the Fall Equinox is deeply tied to senescence—the graceful slowing of life. Autumnal light becomes softer, more diffused, and deeply symbolic. Ornamental grasses bloom, their seed heads illuminated by the gentle backlighting of fall. Wildflowers glow differently, and the landscape invites us to notice subtleties we might miss in summer’s harsh brightness. As temperatures drop and daylight shortens, plants slow their production, creating a sense of timelessness. Fall feels like a pause, a suspension of time, inviting us to breathe, to appreciate, and to witness the stillness between seasons. Nature whispers, “Slow down. You’ve done the work. Now receive.”
The Revelation of Hidden Colors and Inner Truths
One of the most beautiful symbols of fall is the changing of the leaves. As chlorophyll production stops, the pigments that were always present—reds, yellows, oranges—finally become visible. These colors were there all along, simply masked by summer’s growth. This mirrors our own inner process: when we release the constant productivity and outward expression that society demands, our deeper colors, facets, and truths emerge. We are taught to value solar qualities—productivity, output, action—but the equinox reminds us that we are also lunar beings. We hold masculine and feminine energies, outward and inward cycles, and both are essential. As we move into receptivity, intuition heightens, noise quiets, and we can hear the deeper messages of our inner world.
Embracing the Descent and Honoring the Need for Rest
This season invites us to soften, to receive, and to honor the quieter aspects of ourselves. Many people fear stillness or being alone, but the Mabon–Samhain–Yule arc teaches us the necessity of rest. The cortisol-driven pace of summer is not sustainable year-round. As we descend into the underworld season, we meet archetypes like Persephone and Demeter, whose myth reflects grief, descent, regeneration, and eventual rebirth. The underworld has long been understood as a place of rest and renewal. Working with these archetypes helps us embrace the cyclical nature of life, death, and rebirth—within nature and within ourselves.
Rituals of Letting Go, Gratitude, and Reciprocity
Ritually, this is a powerful time to walk in nature, gather seeds, collect fallen leaves, and commune with the trees and plants as they slow down and release. Leaves changing color and falling become teachers of letting go. Trees show us that release is natural, necessary, and beautiful. Through ceremony, we can allow nature to help us move through grief, loss, and appreciation. Gratitude is central to Mabon—gratitude for the harvest, for the support of the earth, for the balance of giving and receiving. Offerings to Gaia, the elementals, the plants, and the unseen realms keep the exchange reciprocal. This is also a wonderful time to gather with loved ones, share seasonal foods, and celebrate the bounty of the year.
Activations, Balance, and the Pathway Into Eclipse Season
On the Fall Equinox, which also initiates Libra season—the sign of balance and harmony—we offer a Fall Equinox activation focused on balancing energies during eclipse season, when things can feel chaotic. In this activation, we work with witnessing your projects ripen, amplifying abundance through balancing inner masculine and feminine energies, and releasing emotional chaos to create structured harmony. These activations are potent and unique to each participant. We also provide a Mabon ritual handout with a specific practice for those new to ritual or those who enjoy exploring new ceremonial forms.
